Prisoner costumes can fit the bill on both of the key objective of any partygoer at a Halloween party. You can have a good laugh and giggle dressed as a prisoner – I call this the slapstick prison costume. Or you can scare the heck out of other party goers with a creepy prison or penitentiary costume.
The slapstick costume is the old stereotype black and white striped outfit. It reminds me of the kind of attire they used to wear in the old silent comedy movies like the keystone cops or such like. You know the one's where the convicts are being chased by the mad cap cops and all sorts of painful looking collisions and catastrophes occur. Its kind of funny for a few minutes but they used to lap this kind of comedy up in the 1920's.
Anyhow, dressed in a top, pants and a good old prison cap (all black and white of course) you'll look like famous slapstick heroes such as Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin or Harold Lloyd. Get a few custard pies ready for a food fight and the classic custard pie in the face routine. Well you don't really have to do that, but at least get into the spirit of the costume.
The scary version of the prisoner costume is the modern looking outfit – the penitentiary jumpsuit. You've probably seen it on TV on the news when celebrity felons like OJ Simpson or Robert Downey Jr. (although he's been keeping his nose squeaky clean these days) are lead to and from court. More often than not, it is the color orange.
If you add a restraining mask to the jumpsuit look you can be the incarcerated serial killer or such like. Not the most pleasant thought but if you want to scare people at Halloween then this option certainly ticks all the boxes. The classic look is Hannibal Lecter of course. And if you watch any of the films you can practice a few of his catchphrase to creep people out or have them in hysterics. Anyone for faver beans and a nice Chianti ?
