Stocking The M4 Carbine

Many manufacturers offer stocks for ARs. The AR series is extremely versatile and the range of stocks mirrors that versatility. One manufacturer that offers a comprehensive range of AR stocks is Magpul. Magpul have always emphasised advanced polymer technology in the construction of their shooting accessories, this material being resistant to chemicals, corrosion, scuffing and impact and being kinder on bare skin in very cold and very hot climates when molded over an aluminium frame. Polymer is also easy to dye and these stocks are available in black, dark earth, OD green and forest green. These stocks have been purchased in huge numbers by individual soldiers, sports shooters, and local and federal law enforcement agencies. Magpul make them in two versions to fit either military or civilian diameter buffer tubes.

The Magpul MOE stock (Magpul Original Equipment) is their baseline model and is very inexpensive. As such, it includes fewer options than the more expensive units. Sling options for example are limited to four slots in the cheekpiece and a hole in the toe of the butt for a clip on or paracord sling. To protect the stock from collapsing unintentionally, Magpup placed the stock release catch in the A frame under the cheekpiece where it is unlikely to be actuated by accident. The locking mechanism employs a premium chrome-silicon spring to stop the stock auto collapsing and a soft synthetic rubber buttpad grips the shoulders arm to prevent slippage. This is a baseline stock and an excellent choice for a weapon likely to be subjected to a lot of abuse or for someone building an AR on a budget or fitting the stock to a shotgun.

The Magpul CTR stock (Compact/Type Restricted) is their top of the range conventional infantry rifle/carbine stock. It combines utilitarian features with those you might expect on a DMR or sniper rifle. Magpul took the step of beefing up their locking mechansism to become self-tightening once set, resisting any tendency to wobble. The wider comb offers a better cheekweld than you can get with the issue M4 carbine stock. Risers are available to raise the comb, but these can only be used with the stock fully extended as they would otherwise foul the charging handle. Three alternative depths of soft rubber butt pad are available with the 0.30" supplied with the military and a 0.55" with the commercial type - 0.70" is the deepest option. Sling mounting options have been expanded over the MOE with the addition of a rear QD sling swivel mount to accept sling swivels of up to 1.5" width.

The Magpul UBR stock (Utility Battle Rifle) goes a step beyond what you would expect from a normal combat rifle stock. The stock offers seven positions and a favourite can be selected in advance by locating a machine screw. The cheekpiece is fixed and the stock moves fore and aft, meaning that the cheek weld should be absolutely consistent. This unit offers two additional sling swivel mounts which you can place on either side of the stock. These can be replaced with ambidextrous versions for an additional price. An aluminium strike plate with sling loop can also be purchased. Magpul thoughtfully supply a storage compartment in the A-frame, but this can be removed to revert to the 'skeleton' look. As with the other models, three thicknesses of butt pad are available. To fit this stock to a fixed stock A1 or A2 rifle you need to replace the buffer and spring with M4 units. It is unlikely that military personnel other than special forces would be allowed to do this, hence the rarity of this stock in photos coming out of Afghanistan.
