Access to an old pre 1995 harddrive?

I have this very old computer (pre-1995) - so no usb or CD burner. It's running some version of DOS - haven't checked yet. Has a 3.5 inch drive AND the older 5.25 inch floppy drives. It's that old. The hard-drive is just as old and not even standard size (it's thicker than your current standard hard drives).
Anyway, I tried pulling the drive out and putting it in an external case, but the drive isn't recognizable when I plug it into my computer. I need a way to pull the data off of it and I don't want to go through manually copying from the floppy drives - plus some of the files may be too large. Any external case/cable that can do drives that old? Or maybe I missed a step in trying to mount it with my current external USB case?
The harddrive is an IDE interface.
As I posted this question, I had just started looking into a null modem cable or lap-link cable with something like file maven software as an option.
Opinions?

You don't even mention what kind of drive interface it has, MFM, RLL, ESDI, or a flavor of SCSI; if it's pre 1995, I doubt that it is IDE/PATA.

I would think the easiest solution is to keep the drive in the computer it is in, boot i up and use a serial transfer cable to copy data to another system. LapLink makes cables and software for that purpose, but there are others as well.

It may be hard to find RS-232 transfer cables locally, and your new system might not even have an RS-232 interface.

... you might be better off taking everything to a computer shop and having them do the work.
