Western Digital Mac & PC?
I have a 500GB Western Digital Passport. Works great, have had it for roughly 3 months. I use a PC at home. Because my design classes uses majority of MACs, I'm able to plug in my hard drive and view files but can't modify any of it. It's important for me to save all my adobe files, pictures, etc. on a drive other than my thumb drive. So, I formatted my hard drive for Mac's use and it works just fine. I'm able to open files, save em, etc. Yet, I believe I may had deleted the drivers for it to be on my PC. So in that case, I can plug it in my computer and the hard drive doesn't appear on the list. It lights on, it works, but no hard drive icon is on. What can I do to reformat it back? I run window's vista. Ugh, I'm so screwed if I can't get this working on my PC either. Help!
Oka, but how do I go about formatting it as FAT32 if my driver doesn't show up? Is there way to RUN/CMD or anything?
It has to do with the file system (the way the drive if formated).
Read = view the files
Write = view and modify/save files
Macs can read/write from HFS+ and FAT32.
All macs can read NTFS, but only mac 10.6 can read/write to NTFS
Windows can read/write only to FAT32 and NTFS.
That was your initial problem, the drive was formated for NTFS so the mac could only read it, not write to it. You said you formatted it on a mac, so now it if formated as HFS+ so windows cannot read/write to it at all without buying and installing software.
To be able to read/write on both mac and pc, format it as FAT32. But, with FAT32 your limited to 4 gig file sizes (unless you zip the file) meaning a single file must be less then 4 gigs in size. To completely eliminate the problem, just buy software that allows windows to read/write to HFS+
