Samsung CLX 2160 N - Makes for A Choice Printer
The Samsung CLX 2160N printer is one of the newest electronics playthings out there today. It isn't just a color laser printer. It's an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny Liliputian version of a color printer. Compared to the rest of Samsung's line of printers, this one is like Tiny Tom. Not only is it Samsung's smallest but is officially known as the world's smallest color laser printer. It has plenty of MFP qualities although not all. The best toner for this printer is the CLX 2160 N toner.
MFP is a short term for multi-functioning printer, which means it has different functional qualities. The Samsung CLX 2160N printer has qualities such as a color laser printer, a scanner, and a copier. Like most Samsungs printers this printer does not have a fax function (reasons will be stated below). It is definitely not a cheap kind of printer, however you don't need to take out a loan to buy one. Note that the N in the product title of Samsung CLX 2160N means that this is a network-ready product. It can be used by all computers on that same network simply by plugging it directly into a router (a network switch like device).
It's a well known fact that printer manufacturers rely on you buying their CLX 2160 N toner (consumables) to make up for the markups they no longer make on their hardware. Heck, a company like Samsung will have dozens of toner cartridges alone to go with their large selection of models. While other printers sell you all colors in a single package, this one lets you buy them one by one. If you print in B&W only, you only buy black toner. If you do color, you start off with all 3 colors. Very often, when you print you use up one or two colors more than the others. By buying them one by one, you buy just what you need and you don't have to throw away half of the blue you bought just because you're low on yellow.
A black and white printer/copier uses a single color toner. Guess what color it is? Good for you. Black's the right answer. But color printers have 3 more toner colors. Do you know what those are? In layman's terms, they could be described as blue, yellow and red. The names used in the printing business are a lot cooler. Instead of blue, you have Cyan. You get the picture. Some older printers use a single cartridge for each color. In a unit this small, the colors come in a single package. This printer punches out documents at 4ppm in A4, (that's the size of the paper). That's a very respectable number for a printer of this size. Times vary between mono (B&W) and color mode. Mono is much faster at 14 seconds from start to finish. Color takes longer. 26 seconds round trip.
The function of the scanner quality is important to this model printer because if converts the paper you put into it into images you can see over screen. The scanner for this printer can scan to USB/Folder/Application/Network. It has a dpi of 1,200x500. The bed isn't very big so don't expect to be able to scan anything bigger than an A5 document. In other words, this isn't the scanner of choice for a law office unless you want to scan each legal document twice.
It is important to know that the copy differs from two different speeds. These speeds apply to color and mono (there's that fancy word for B&W again). The speed in the color is 5ppm in A4. The speed in Mono is 16ppm in A4. Seconds for the first copy out time are 18 for mono and 45 for color.
Sorry. Samsung just couldn't fit the fax function into the little guy. Fax needs a little more space and Samsung wanted to keep this machine at the size you see it now. Plus, faxing costs a bit more and they wanted to keep the price at this point too. Hey, you can always scan and email an image to a fax forwarding service. They're dirt cheap and incredibly persistent if the person you want to send a fax to has one of those on/off fax machines.
It's your lucky day. Although this unit is more expensive than your average printer, for what it does and considering its small footprint (remember, it always costs more to make something smaller than bigger), You get everything above for a very reasonable retail price of USD$420. And look on the bright side. Samsung sells unit that do pretty much the same thing for a lot more $$$.
Buying a CLX 2160 N printer cartridge separately will cost you around USD $20. The all in one set of rainbow toners for this particular unit will set you back around USD$70. Remember that there are a lot of web stores out there that have more competitive prices than your local business supply shop. Shop around for the best deal. Finally, remember that Samsung is constantly bringing out new products. This particular Samsung is one of many of this year's newest models.
