A Little Tip: Helpful Bay Window Covering Ideas
You buy a house with a fantastic looking bay window. You think about all the wonderful ways you can dress it. You then think of shades or curtains, then you set out to shop around browsing and even pricing things out. Later the reality of actually dressing your beautiful window hits you. There are a few window covering trends that might be able to assist you.
Ready made window treatments just won't cut it!
You can not simply go and get ready made curtains or shades. You will have to have them tailor made, and just how much is that likely to cost you. Quite a bit, that is if you do not do your research.
Decision time: curtains or shades
So the initial choice might be should it be curtains or shades. Bay windows in many cases can look really good with customized roman shades. They will look sharp and work very well when there is furniture to either side of the window allowing minimal space to hang curtains. Maybe there's a window seat built in. If this is the case then roman shades tend to be a really great way to dress your bay window. If your window clear all around then curtains will be an excellent way to go, especially long to the floor curtains. Longer curtains really dress a window and give a touch of extravagance. In addition, they make the room feel warmer in the wintertime.
Tips on measuring for shades
You must take plenty of care when measuring shades to suit a bay window. If you get it incorrect then the shades will be thrown straight into the trash can. Very often they cannot be altered, especially if they are too narrow or even short.
Should you be measuring for roman shades then do not forget to provide a gap of about an inch between the shades. This is to make allowance for the ties getting increasingly more bulky as they are drawn up. They will start to bump into one another.
A small tip I find helpful is to add an additional half inch to the drop ( length ) measurement. The actual shades, once made and put up seem to shrink a bit. So adding it on now means it's much more likely to fit spot on after they've been made.
Measuring for curtains in a Bay Window covering
This is a tricky one so concentrate. The trend lately has been to fit ornamental bay window rods. My advice is simple, think again because they are far from simple to fit correctly. Subsequently the curtains fight to open and close with the special passing rings. And so what do I recommend? My favorite way of dressing a bay is to fit top boards. These are basically six inch by one inch timber boards. You fit them over your window on brackets much like fitting a shelf.
Next hang curtains from the bottom of the boards on a curtain track. Then cover the top board using a cloth covered pelmet or cornice. They can be manufactured in all shapes and sizes and appear ultra modern or more traditional.
So the procedure to fitting curtains in a bay window are :
1. Cut and then fit the top boards in the bay over the windows.
2. After that, determine the width and take the drop ( length ) measurement from the track to the floor.
3. After that measure the leading edges of the top boards for making a pelmet / cornice.
So you now have all the dimensions you require for creating the curtains as well as top treatment. The following step would be to choose your fabric and have them made.
